I forgot a lot of the beginning of this dream. In it, I was living somewhere in the snowy north, where I've always dreamed of living. There was some big, brown, wooden house that was old-fashioned and drafty, but appealing. I was moving out of this house. The house had a back area which was like a huge warehouse. All of my stuff was in boxes here and I was getting ready to move along with my mother. Eventually we stepped out into the moving truck. We were next to a traintrack. A big iron beast of a steam engine passed by us. It seemed like we had almost regressed in time, back to the 1940s or some time like that. There was a hill behind the house that was covered in snow. It was cold and windy.
Apparently, before leaving this area, me and my mother took a last trip to some strange zoo that was close to it. We went into one building in this zoo that was apparently owned and operated by a very eccentric old man with a white beard. He showed us the strange creatures in terrariums in the walls. Most of these were creatures no one had ever heard of, but apparently were all in fact real creatures from distant, unheard-of regions of the earth. This must have been what visiting a zoo felt like in the 1800s. I wish I remember more of the exhibits, but I only have two in clear memory, which were the two most distinctive ones.
One of them was a number of things that looked like living jellybeans or gummy candies. They were orange, yellow, and red. They didn't really move. They sat together clung onto a rock like a bunch of starfish. They were terrestrial creatures rather than aquatic ones, however. My mother was particularly surprised by these things, saying they looked like toys. A number of them had what seemed to be little faces on them, which looked like they were carved into the gummy surface. They had sleepy eyes and wide smiles. These creatures were like little balls but they had four dark, spindly limbs that they apparently moved around with. None of them moved when we observed them, however.
The second group of creatures were in an exhibit that was similar. Both of these things apparently lived in a rainforest-like environment. These ones were all a pale green color. They seemed to be closer to a plant than animal. They looked like large bulbs that would open up a sort of "mouth," kind of like a venus flytrap. However, these organisms did not seem to be carnivorous and did not have fangs. Their "mouths" would open quickly and widely as they let out a sound that they used to communicate which sounded exactly like a human belch. They began a lively conversation and before I knew it the whole exhibit was drowned out in the sound of these belches. I normally would have found this repulsive, but was too fascinated by these organisms to be in this case. Their mouths opened wide and their "lips" rippled with the weight of the air being pushed out.
The last area was an open-air section that we looked at from above. The animals in it were more ordinary: they were some sort of primate. In terms of their body structure and general appearance, they were closest to oranugtans, but were a gray/black color, like silverback gorillas. Now, this is where something happened that might sound very funny, but I swear this happened in the dream: One of these "apes" was a human with a bunch of fur stuck on him, pretending to be one of these apes. And this human was George Carlin. At first, me and my mom were concerned because we thought he was in the ape pit because he was demented, but he seemed to be doing some sort of bit and was doing standup in it. I suppose if we really were in the past, it would make sense for him to be there too?
