Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon is enough of a classic that it's hard to know where to start in introducing it. But if for some reason you're a zoomer (and let's be honest, American zoomers watch this show more than Japanese kids these days), it's the most archetypal mahou shoujo in existence and features a group of high school girls who transform into a team of magical warriors named after the planets. One of these girls is Hino Rei. She has that sort of stereotypical "holy" demeanor in the manga and is more aloof and disinterested in "lowly" and "material" things. In the manga, she retains this level-headed attitude but is a lot more of a typical teenage girl. She is lovely!

Sengoku Ace and Sengoku Blade are two games from Psikyo, which is one of the three major giants of shooting games in the 90s along with Cave and Raizing. Psikyo games are all about FAST bullets, short and simple stages, and tight choreography and routing. I've only played through Sengoku Ace out of the two. In it, Koyori is a young, somewhat tomboyish miko who is decisive and quick! In the second of the series, Sengoku Blade, she grows up into a voluptuous woman with MASSIVE FUCKIN KNOCKERS. Obviously, you can imagine that I prefer the latter. But I have to confess that I haven't played the second in the series yet, so can only put Koyori's young form on the list. As tempting as it is for the sake of Koyori, I didn't totally love Sengoku Ace enough to jump at the opportunity. But I'll play it someday.

The Samurai Spirits fighting game series is better known as Samurai Shodown in the English-speaking world. Though I like fighting games, I never played these very much. They are quality games; I just never got around to it. The most notable character for me is Nakoruru and her younger sister Rimururu. They are miko, but are also Ainu, which is an interesting touch. If you look at their robes, they have the Ainu-style patterns and are not typical miko garb. The series takes advantage of this to make them more "connected to nature" in the sense of being more rural and in touch with the natural world without as much of the cultural "Japanese" side of Shintou. Kind of like a Native American medicine man. It's cool. I know them mostly from the two OVAs I mention here. The first one is pretty mediocre and you don't even see Nakoruru in it too much. But the second is totally focused around her and is a real gem.

This is some GOOFY shit. It's about an amateur treasure hunter who meets an elf princess named Ren who he can't communicate with. There's some other stuff going on with some rival group who is also searching for the same treasure... And then there's mostly just a lot of silly gags. It's hard to make much out of, but it is quite hilarious. Anyway, the main rival is a guy with aquamarine-colored hair who speaks backwards (???) and has three triplets as his servants/assistants: Takarada Haruki, a dutiful secretary, Takarada Natsuki, a hot-headed general, and Takarada Mizuki, a graceful miko. You know which one I like.

One of my favorite obscurities. This one-shot OVA is based on a PC-98 visual novel of the same name which I still want to read one of these days. It's a mahou shoujo story at its core, focusing on a group of super-heroines called the Lakers (Los Angeles didn't sue them over this one!). All of them are extremely attractive. While I want to give special attention to the super-busty judou practitioner Tachibana Natsune or Judou Laker, at the end of the day my favorite can't be any other than Hikawa Yayoi, the graceful and pure shrine maiden. How can I avoid two of my fetishes, glasses and miko, coming together in one beautiful girl? Anyway watch this, it's fun.

Chronology-wise, it might seem weird to put Touhou here, but fuck it, Reimu has been there from the very first PC-98 games. Anyway, I don't know how to introduce you to Touhou Project if you don't already know about it. It's a series of amazing danmaku (bullet hell) shooting games full of cute girls and strange lore with a lot of deep references to Japanese mythology, history, and religion. It's basically the second language of the Japanese internet (plus the rest of Asia to a great degree), or at least was before normies found their way onto it. It has two prominent miko in its cast. One is the most famous character in the series, Hakurei Reimu, a lazy and greedy shrine maiden who we still can't help but love. Her early design was a more standard miko outfit and she had purple hair. In her more famous redesign, she got a unique outfit which looks more like a miko-inspired doll and her hair became brown. I honestly have trouble deciding which design I like more! The second miko is Kochiya Sanae, first introduced in the 10th game in the series, Touhou Fuujinroku 〜 Mountain of Faith. She is the miko of the Moriya Shrine, a mysterious place at the top of a mountain that is tied to a very ancient and primal sense of Japanese faith. The frogs and snakes on her outfit reflect themes of it.
